She nodded, but I could see the underlying tension in her face. “Relax. You’ll do fine. I know you have common ground, it is one reason I thought you guys would be good together.”
Lacey’s big brown eyes bored into mine, “I know, but this is alternately thrilling and daunting.”
“That’s why we do it this way,” I reassured her. “Now, remember, no sharing of last name, where you live specifically. You can talk about work, those common interests that I thought would bring you together and so on. Ok. Ready?”
I have read stories where the author writes, ‘she squared her shoulders and flung her hair back’. I thought that was poetic license, but I swear I saw Lacey do that. The dimmed restaurant lights caught the auburn in her curly dark hair that cascaded down her back. She is perfect, I thought. This is my best match yet.
The meetup was scheduled for an hour only. Experience had taught me that any longer and things could possibly go awry; oversharing could happen and a forced camaraderie occur. At the end of the hour I called time.
“Right, the next step is for you to call me individually and let me know whether you want to see each other again. If so, I will set up things, and then we will take it from there? Understood?”
As I walked back to my car, my phone rang. It was Lacey. “Oh my goodness!” she yelled before I could even say ‘hi’. “I loved this. It’s perfect! I want to move ahead.”
“I told you,” I laughed. “Now I need to hear from the other party, and hopefully the love is a two-way street.”
“I hope so. I really do.” For the next five minutes Lacey gushed about how much she had loved the experience. My call waiting signaled, and I put Lacey on a brief hold. “Hey Cilla, it’s Michael. Wow! Lacey is amazing. She is perfection! Can we move to next steps?”
I hung up after talking to both parties and punched the sky with my fist. “YES!” It didn’t matter that I had been in the matchmaking business for over a decade, finding that perfect match was always a thrill.
In the morning I would call Michael and Donna’s fertility clinic to begin the first steps of helping Lacey become their gestational carrier and carrying their baby for them.
