To anticipate for an entire year
A trip to vacation in Jamaica for Christmas.
Rolling along, at last, we were ready to be airborne.
We observed through plane windows
Rivulets for rivers and tiny boxes for buildings.
We sailed on high through banks
Of silver-edged snow clouds.
As we chatted during our marathon wait for luggage
In weather hot beyond hot,
Our hired driver finally appeared.
When we saw him hunched over the steering wheel,
His hands encased in ragged leather driving gloves,
We’d no idea what terrors lay ahead.
Beep-beeping at travelers walking
On the dusty, narrow road,
He would creep up on other vehicles
Till bumpers almost touched,
Then give a mighty heave to swerve around,
Barely missing the front bumper
Of the just-passed car.
We were in awe of the ocean
That came right up to the road
To lap at the small stone-wall barrier.
At the end of a bumpy hill
Was a lovely villa enclosed
In a frame of riotously colored flowers.
Our travel to arrive was just the beginning
Of a never-to-be-forgotten time
Of family together in a beauteous land.
