When I was just a girl,
Like racing, chasing, roller skating—
I gave all these a whirl.
I rode my bike all over town
For hours in a row.
We’d no computers or TV—
I didn’t miss them though.
The games we played were exercise,
But then we didn’t know it,
Though improved strength and muscle tone
Would actually show it.
As an adult, I thought I’d try
A program to get slim.
I did so many kinds of reps,
It caused my head to swim.
I stretched and strained each muscle group
Till every move I’d make
Would pain me in my shaky limbs,
And all my joints would ache.
I added diet to my plan
With foods like leafy greens,
Then found I was not willing to
Lose weight by any means.
But since I’m old, I’ve made a rule:
If it tastes bad, don’t chew it.
And as for workouts, I decreed:
If it could hurt, don’t do it.
I race to dinner for a meal
Of foods I love to eat
And find a short ride in the car
Is a relaxing treat.
Now turning pages in a book
Is exercise for me,
And I enjoy the skaters’ moves
That I see on TV.
My joints ache from arthritis, and
When startled, I may jump.
At last, though, I’ve concluded that
It’s ok to be plump.
