Your origin is China,
Where you were cultivated
For many, many years.
You came first to America in ships,
Along with Christopher Columbus.
Come summer’s warm sunshiny days,
You scent the air with sweetness,
Your sun-hued orbs
With cheeks ablush with pink,
Hold on to green-leafed limbs
Of wide and squatty trees.
A way that I enjoy just one
Of your fantastic fruits
Is to take a giant mouthful,
Continue to the pit,
And allow the juicy goodness
To run right down my arms.
I love the savory sweets,
Derived from your golden globes,
Like cookies, puffs, and pancakes,
And crust-filled pies and cobblers,
Or tarts and crisps and crumbles,
All tasting of ambrosia.
Nor would I ever turn away
From Your preserves or jams,
Alone or with fresh raspberries,
On warm and fluffy biscuits,
Or sliced, along with strawberries,
And smothered with whipped cream.
My favorite, I must admit,
Is custard from your produce
With sugar, eggs, and milk,
That’s slow-churned to perfection,
A marvelous confection--
Peach ice cream--yum, yum, yum.
