poured in my heart and my soul,
prepared everything for perfection,
but the glory someone else stole.
Someone who did very little,
someone who always came late,
someone who looked for the limelight,
someone I wanted to hate.
I tried to be gracious and humble,
I struggled with simmering ire.
It happened over and over,
as if she poured gas on my fire.
This person who never was ready,
this person who never prepared,
this person who took all my ideas
which I so grudgingly shared.
But I was a peace-loving Christian.
I hid my frustration so well.
I silently fumed and I muttered,
and was sure that no one could tell
that I was so full of resentment,
that I was a mess in my head,
that my smile was not one of contentment,
and that I was angry instead.
Then Jesus spoke into my spirit,
rebuking my self-centered heart.
He told me to offer my talents
and seek no reward for my part.
To be someone who reaches in friendship,
be someone who tries to discern
the gifts that the other can offer,
for I yet had so much to learn.
I had to let down my defenses,
I had to bury my pride.
I had to be like a servant,
and let Jesus be my close guide.
I had to offer forgiveness,
my record of wrongs to erase,
to bury all my resentment,
and walk in love's kindness ways.
