Weeks before, she had taken her bridesmaids–to-be to the bridal salon and had spent the morning admiring the lovely gowns. Of course, the goal was to find suitable attire which would double as party dresses. My happiness of their acceptance to be attendants was tempered by the costs they would endure.
I had found the dress of my dreams. As the wedding professional slid the dress over my arms and fitted it to my body, I saw an image of myself in the mirror. Eyes sparkling and my face glowing, I hardly heard the exclamations of the girls’ admiration. This was it.
We celebrated at a local tea café with delectable desserts. Chatter, giggles, and plans dominated the conversation until one of the girls asked if my mom would be going to see the gown. I felt the floor of the café shift as if a movie reel had skipped a few notches on the film. With more confidence than I felt, I said, ‘Sure’.
The next weekend, mom arrived with her array of coiffed hair, luggage, and perfume. She immediately took over the reins of the wedding preparations. All of my plans dissolved in her "Oh no's" and "Are you kidding me" comments. Her ideas suspiciously sounded like an ideal wedding for herself.
It’s about me and my future husband! As we drove to the bridal salon, mom kept digging and nagging about perceptions and her friends’ daughters’ weddings. As we pulled into the parking lot, I turned and looked at her without saying a word.
She noticed the silence and looked to see what I was doing.
“You will stop right now! This is MY wedding and I will have the final say as to MY choices. I asked you out of respect but that is quickly leaving!” I got out of the car, slammed the door, and went into the shop. The attendant had my dress ready in a room so I went right in, not caring if mom followed.
I could hear the murmuring outside the dressing room and so I prayed. ‘God, You are sovereign here. You guide and lead me. You have given me hope and a future. Forgive me for my impatience and help me to see the struggles of my mother. Help me to love her as You love me. Lord, may You be glorified in my decisions.”
The attendant led me out to the triple mirror with halogen lighting. There stood my mother. Her face beamed with pride. She said, “You did well and you are the most beautiful bride I have ever seen.”
As I continued down the aisle to rehearse the vows, my heart sang, “It is well with my soul.”
