The nature of many animals is to attack the weakest member of the herd, pack, or flock. Rarely is there a human to intervene. In this case, my beautiful young grandmother did the unexpected. Almost like the tale of the old woman who lived in a shoe, Gran had so many children she didn’t know what to do, except in her case, she usually could figure out a plan.
The kids reported to her how one young chicken was being bullied unmercifully by the others. His fellow fowl had attacked him and pecked off nearly all of his feathers. He was too young to provide Sunday dinner, and she did not have the means to isolate him from his tormentors.
After pondering the situation, she decided that what made perfect sense was to construct a suit for him. Someone held him while she measured and made a pattern. Leaving the necessary gaps, she sewed it together and, to the delight of her young audience, slipped it on him.
“But Mama,” one of her sons asked, “how will it stay fastened?”
“Just watch,” she said as she carefully closed the seam with strong, tiny stitches any tailor would be proud to show.
It has been related to me how the little baby made an unusual noise. It wasn’t a peep or a chirp but more like, “Pea-urp,” so that’s what they named him.
Right away, he became a pet, and the mean attacks to his feathers ceased. Gran had made the suit a little big to provide for his expected growth. According to my mother, he seemed so happy he strutted around as if he were a big, handsome rooster. What eventually should have become a full-throated cock-a-doodle-doo remained that funny little croak that matched his name.
As his fellow chicks grew into fryer-size and fed this large family during those lean times of The Great Depression, Pea-urp enjoyed immunity until the suit no longer fit and his lovely feathers covered him.
Just yesterday, I asked one of the remaining two of Gran’s kids, who was quite young at the time, whatever happened to him. Although her mind is still very sharp, she simply couldn’t remember how his saved-by-the-bell story ended.
She said she was quite sure, however, that he never became the chicken who came to dinner!
And then, as always, the dear memory of Pea-urp made her smile.
