The first time that he saw her,
She was lovely in his eyes,
And he said within himself,
“Indeed, I shall seek to be her friend,”
And with anticipation, he smiled.

He strove to be in places
Where he deemed that she might go.
Then at every opportunity,
He sought for a word with her,
And with a strong resolve, he smiled.

And when he had occasion
To be long in her company,
He found such ease in conversation,
He knew he had found the helpmeet planned for him,
And with good hope for the future, he smiled.

Upon their wedding day, he stood
With trembling limbs beside the altar
To pledge to her his sacred vow
To cherish her till time should be no more,
And with sincere devotion, he smiled.

And when was laid into his arms
The son God fashioned from their love,
And later came a girlchild,
He felt most blessed of men,
And with a fullness of joy, he smiled.

He toiled with labor of hand and mind,
And they dwelt in their house securely.
Their children grew strong
In stature and in wisdom and in service to the Lord,
And with a special contentment, he smiled.

With old age came remembrance
Of crooked paths made straight,
And the love he had for the wife of his youth
Burned brighter now than in the beginning,
And with all gratitude to God, he smiled.
