Previous Challenge Entry (Level 4 – Masters)
Topic: COLOR (07/30/20)
Visiting from out of state, I was eager to see my sister in action. She taught three grades in a rural boarding school and promised to introduce me to her students.

“Boys and girls, we have a visitor today.” She drew me close to her and we both smiled broadly, knowing the children would guess right away that we were sisters. “Can you guess who this is?” Sis asked with a twinkle in her eye.

“I know, I know!” The children cried out in unison, waving hands in the air.

“All right, class, who is it?”

“Your mother!”

What? Sis tried to suppress her grin. I wasn’t offended but I was surprised. Why would they think I was her mother? I’m less than three years older. Ah, of course. The grey hair.

Mom, Sis, and I all started turning grey in our early forties. Dad once declared he didn’t mind being a “grandpa,” but he didn’t like the idea of being married to a “grandma”. He may have only been kidding, but just in case, Mom covered her gray hairs until Dad stopped coloring his. Sis also colored her gray to match her youthful face. But I was married to an older man and did not want to be mistaken for his daughter, so I was actually pleased with my gray hairs—until I was mistaken for my sister’s mother.

I loved the proverb about gray hair being a crown of glory. Cover the grey? Not me. And as the gray becomes more silvery, I like the reminder that it loses color through the years of living covered in my Lord’s righteousness. Isn’t that what the proverb is implying: gray hair is gained in the process of living a righteous life.

Sis eventually tired of coloring her hair and when the two of us are together now, there is no doubt that we are sisters. But our hope and prayer is that it is our Lord’s righteousness that shines forth from us, whiter than snow—the ultimate shining crown of glory.

I started turning gray when I was 18. I gave up coloring it when I turned 50. I'm intrigued by your spellings of gray/grey throughout your piece. I always thought it was interchangeable and a personal preference. Is there some kind of rule of it's use?

This is soooo good. I remember the day my husband said, "You don't walk like an old person and you don't act like an old person. But your gray hair makes you look like a old woman." I let him live and we had a laugh about it.
