Through potholes, mud, and many bumps
I had no map, had lots of wrecks
But bravely took my foolish lumps
No seatbelt kept me safe and snug
No good sense taught me lessons
Round and round I raced and cried
Seeking answers to wrong questions
Always ending up with pain
Caution finally had its way
My speed decreased, but fear went up
Too scared to even pray
My eyes were glued to rearview mirrors
Afraid the past would ambush poor old me
I didn’t give the windshield glance
Then missed the curve and hit that tree
After umpteen views reflecting time
Not seeing how my mind was reeling
I crashed again, fell in a ditch
Not conscious now, and barely breathing
A voice nearby began to speak
Inviting me to heed advice
Angelic like, he set me straight
About which way to face or pay the price
“Stop looking back,” he roared and preached.
“back then is gone and has no right.
The future goes in ONE direction, so
Ignore what’s gone and out of sight!”
He told me how the evil one
Wants our eyes on painful pasts
Then leaving me a brand-new map
He up and disappeared so fast!
When I awoke and looked around
My heart felt light with such a lift
And now I finally see the signs
There really is no path for us back there
The PRESENT is God’s gift!
