Topic: ANCIENT (06/04/20)
For one lightening bug moment in my youth, the idea of studying Archeology seemed fascinating and mysterious. How cool would it be to wear khaki cargo shorts, cute little pith helmets, and sleep in tents while uncovering secrets to the history of humans who lived further back than I could even fathom?

Then I heard that at some point in those studies there would be serious and tedious digging, possibly in the hot sun in a foreign country and for prolonged periods. Suddenly, it seemed more prudent to enjoy a tall glass of iced tea, plop down by the dog, and re-think that wobbly idea. I took a vote. The nays won!

Nonetheless, I have never lost the curiosity connected with our really, really, really old ancestors and how they must have gone about their activities of daily living. Most museums showcase the standard collections of eating utensils, carved fertility figures, and pieces of this or that obscure artifact or supposed behemoth fang. Such strolls down that predictable lane became a little ho-hum and out of touch for me.

Now, to my delight, there is a resurgence of curiosity and energy about the incredible excavating going on in Israel. Those amazing and patient archeologists move at snail pace as they gently and respectfully uncover layer after layer of confirmation that life in the Holy Land existed just as the Bible and Torah reported.

They are finding undeniable treasures that support the truth of our heritage that non-believers have often ridiculed. Even the 3,000-year-old city where King David hid from Saul has been unearthed. Those are stunning treasures that make us gasp, but I am still intrigued by the who, what, why, when, and why of everyday family life.

What did they use for baby diapers? Did the men clean those smelly fish before presenting them to be cooked for supper? What about combs, toothbrushes, soap? Did they go to bed at dark and wake up with the morning light? How about time? Were there sundials?

My list is never ending. Instead of counting sheep (theirs, not mine) I ponder everything from how they did laundry to washing dishes, from cleaning homes to bathing children. Did spouses ever go out for date night? Where would out be?

Those folks who sift through mounds of dirt and pieces of ancient minutia get weary and tired sometimes as they proceed inch by inch to uncover and document history in Biblical proportions. God bless their amazing efforts.

I would love to be there, right in the middle of the excitement, watching from the coolness of my air-conditioned tent. Of course, sunscreen and a pith helmet would be necessary. I’m not sure if there is iced tea in Israel.

It's definitely not Indiana Jones-worthy, but the real archeologist work wonders. You do have an inquisitive mind with all your questions.
