On cue, the doors swing out away from me into the cavernous room. My eyes adjust to the brilliance emanating from the center. I am aware of a sea of faces to my right and left but my focus remains straight ahead.
One more mental check of my attire, headpiece ... check, gown ... check, heels ... check, bouquet ... check, veil ... check.
I step forward into the room as the strains of an ethereal melody beat to my cadence as I walk down the aisle towards my love. My heart races with the anticipation of my dream coming true.
The attendants turn in their seats and I hear their murmurs of ‘beautiful’, ‘stunning’, ‘so pretty’ ... I continue on until I near the altar, poised and self-assured.
Suddenly, my heel turns causing me to stumble. As I catch myself from falling, I look down and see my shoe has changed. The white satin heel had disappeared. In its place, a brown, dirty, flat with a hole in the toe.
What happened? Then I see my other shoe is the same. My gown has altered, too. It’s drab, shredded, soiled, and ragged. My hair loses its updo and cascades in a snarled mess around my shoulders. Gone are the tiara, veil, and jewelry. I’m a filthy mess.
The crowd’s silence overwhelms my confidence.
I cry, ‘Oh no! Not today! I’m so close.’
Then I notice a lantern in my hand where a bouquet once rested. The flame is flickering as if low on oil. It can’t go out, now. I am almost to my beloved. Tears blur my vision threatening to spill over. My heart is breaking.
Raising my head I look at my love to see his reaction.
He reaches for my hand.
