Artist Andy Warhol once famously declared that everyone will have fifteen minutes of fame.

I’m not sure how true that is, for whenever I meet famous people, they quickly clap their arms around me – and then ask, “Who are you?”

However, let’s just think for a moment about that fifteen-minute allocation…

With over six billion people inhabiting this planet, if we each have to take individual turns to bask in the world’s spotlight, some of us will be facing a wait of more than one hundred and seventy thousand years. And by then, there’s every chance that most of those we were with will have forgotten all about us. We may also have trouble recalling who they were as well, so I guess that’s only fair.

Then again, if our fifteen minutes is going to clash with thousands or even millions of other folks’ fifteen minutes, who’s going to notice our personal quarter-hour of glory? It hardly seems worth the effort…

But who allocated these fifteen minutes? Was it Warhol himself, while he paused to stoop towards us lesser-known mortals so he might toss a scrap of recognition our way? All while he was lapping up the art world’s adulation throughout the 1960s Pop-Art scene?

Any wish we might have to be famous can blind us to its downside. For while fame might provide recognition from others, and special courtesies and respect; it can also lock us into the roles or expectations that other people have of us, so we get minimal privacy to be ourselves or to stretch beyond those expectations.

Fame is illusory, while significance is the reality that God had in mind for us when he visited our planet to become one of us. Through Jesus, he showed us what God is like, while showing us our potential significance as we trust him. This significance grows within us as we keep allowing his Spirit to integrate and to fulfil our abilities and our character.

And as he adds the flavour of his grace within our connection with the people who fill our days, he will trust us as agents of this grace, to build their significance as they begin to discover his availability to them.

Fifteen minutes of fame is thus purely optional – but how much does that weigh, when eternity is stretching out ahead of us?

Good point! I would not want to be famous. Perhaps a little attention once in a while would be nice, but that's it!

Oh I loved this entry!
Excellent message and powerfully written.

I love this part:

So true!
