That I would marry into,
I’d look for a mother-in-law
Who never would take sides,
And for all the things that I did wrong,
She wouldn’t criticize.
I’d pray she’d love our children as her own.
For a father-in-law, I’d hope for one
Who truly followed Christ
And taught his son a reverence for God.
He’d be a living picture
Of the kindness of the Lord
To both his wife and children,
And he’d extend that kindness to me.
For a sister-in-law, I’d select one
As dear as a true sister,
Who’d share with me
Across the years,
Along with her family,
The fun times and the sad.
For our son and our daughter,
I’d long for mates
Who would ever treasure them
In the deepest parts of their hearts
And would build them up in the faith,
While parenting together
In wisdom and tenderness.
Then I’d extend that selfsame wish
For our grandchildren’s spouses.
Almighty God saw deep within my heart,
Both spoken and unspoken prayers,
And through His infinite mercy,
He granted my every wish
And blessed me beyond knowing.
