Your efforts a futility,
But then you showed how you possess
Superior agility.
Occasions when you spit and hiss
Make your resentment evident,
While other times, your rhythmic purr
Reveals a softer sentiment.
I’ve watched you creep across the floor
As stealthily you stalked your prey,
And then on hapless victim pounced—
Just one of many games you play.
Sometimes you’re such a scaredy-cat!
When frightened by a sudden noise,
You jump and run away in fright
Until you can regain your poise.
Your curiosity is great
As fearlessly you climb great heights,
And even though you often fall,
You rarely use up all nine lives.
Your mood swings are mercurial:
From pleasant or affectionate
To arrogant, aloof, or sad,
And much too often, obstinate.
With many varied attributes,
You’re an amazing animal.
While some folks love you, many don’t,
Which doesn’t bother you at all.
I think you would be proud to know
About your history,
You’re part of God’s creation when
He uttered, “Let there be . . . .”
