A circle of thick logs provided everyone with a seat, close enough to reach forward and toast marshmallows. Suddenly, a brief shower and roar of sparks surged out as a couple of logs collapsed together, drawing a few gasps from those who quickly drew back, and adding a brief, extra glow to everyone’s faces.
Overhead, a cloudless sky was pinpricked with myriads of stars. “Oh look,” cried Millie, pointing skyward, “just imagine if the sparks could fly up and join those stars!”
“Don’t be stupid, sis - that’s not how stars are made!” retorted her brother Craig.
Snickers of agreement alerted Pastor Jake that a significant moment – and possibly the whole camping trip - could be lost; along with all the prayer and hard work that he and his leaders’ team had put into arranging it.
“Anybody got any ideas about how the stars got there?” he asked.
Snickers stopped. Heads looked up. And exchanged glances
“What about the Big Bang Theory?” asked Sandy. “It describes how everything got started, like how billions of years ago, a small dense superforce expanded so fast that atoms came about, and that’s how we’re here.”
“It also says that the universe is still expanding,” added Wayne.
“Interesting idea,” said Jake, “but does anyone know why we’re here?”
Pausing for responses that never came, he continued.
“The Bible tells us why – so we might know God personally - even though we seem so small and insignificant when you compare us with the size of the universe that’s stretching out there above us.”
“But doesn’t that say something about taking only a few days – when evolution talks about millions of years?” countered Craig.
“Well, for a moment, let’s think about something even quicker – like that Big Bang,” Jake replied. “While it’s possible for God to work miracles like that, the theory doesn’t give him any recognition. But it can trip up those who support it. After all, can you imagine an explosion actually creating anything – when every other explosion we hear about, or see, only causes major damage?
Craig was back. “But what evolution and fossils and stuff like that?”
“I don’t know much about fossils – even though I seem so old to some of you,” said Jake, “but evolution describes survival of the fittest, at random with no mind behind it. And it has lots of holes that can trip us up. If the universe was made – and sustains itself - at random, it doesn’t explain how we still have primitive life forms; or how intricate their instincts are; or how nature is so balanced. And if everything has taken millions of years to evolve; would you think I was crazy if I started bragging about how my car took even took a century to gather itself together from a loose collection of spare parts in my garage, until it was finally complete enough to drive? Probably!”
Puzzled looks and frowns competed with the smiles that caught his drift.
“But how scientific is the Bible?” asked Kurt.
“Kurt, the Bible focuses on life’s why; while science concentrates on testing theories of the how - two separate questions that belong together. Many of the world’s greatest scientists are Christians, who know that while the Bible is scientifically accurate, it is less scientifically detailed. For its bigger story is that God made and loves us – enough to come here personally through Jesus, so we might come to know him in a relationship that will outlast the millions of years that evolution talks about.
“Thanks for all your questions, but it’s time we all got some sleep because tomorrow will be here before we know it. And we’ve got lots to do – and to explore…”
