Olivia bounced into the kitchen carrying a pink plastic pony. “Momma, can I watch TV?”
“Did you do your homework?”
“Yes! I even read the story for tomorrow.”
“Okay, but only for an hour.”
Olivia squatted down to turn the switch. She started flipping through the channels until an image stole her attention. “Momma, come see this! Momma, come now!”
“Olivia, what is it? You don’t have to scream.”
“Momma, look!”
A spaceship shot up into the sky accelerating faster than the speed of sound. Fire shot out from under it pushing it up higher into the clear blue sky. After a minute, a white cloud of vapor formed near the craft and billows of smoke and fire shot out in all directions. Pieces of the craft seemed to descend all over the sky.
“Momma, it blew up!”
“Oh, oh, oh!” Her mom fell into the couch beside her. “There was a teacher on board!” Olivia leaned against her Mom’s shoulder. “Momma, I’m scared.”
The front door opened and a lanky teenager walked into the room. “Hi awesome family, what’s up?”
“Bart, have you heard what happened?” Oliva jumped up and grabbed his shirt.
“No, lil’ sis, take a chill pill and tell me.”
“The space shuttle exploded!”
“No way. Like, no way. That’s totally awful.” Bart slumped down beside his Mom.
An hour later their dad walked into the room where they were still staring at the screen. “Hey, I can see you’ve seen…”
Olivia jumped up and threw her arms around him. “Dad, it’s just terrible.”
“Oh, sweetie. It sure is. I can’t believe it….those poor families.” He slid in next to his family. “Why don’t we turn down the sound for a minute and pray?”
Fast forward to 2018
Olivia stirred the pot on the stove while her eyes were glued to a small screen. A newly married prince and princess stepped into a horse-drawn carriage while crowds flocked around them. Olivia sighed. If only I could have been there to see that!
She ducked her head into the living room, “Hey Adam, can you ask Amanda to set the table?”
Her husband didn’t look up from the do-it-yourself show he was engrossed in. “Sure, right now?”
“In about 10 minutes dinner will be ready.”
“Great.”
Ten minutes later Adam still hadn’t gotten up from the recliner, so Olivia walked into her daughter’s room. “Amanda, we need the table set for dinner. It’s your chore today.”
“Aw, Mom, do I have to do that right now? I’m in the middle of this episode. I’m just about to find out who’s the most talented!”
“Now, Amanda. You know you can pause it and watch it later.”
“But it’s the semifinals! I really want to know!”
“Just come!”
Amanda frowned and pressed a button on the remote. “If I haaave to…”
“Yes, you have to. Now, do you know where your brother is?”
“In his room watching something.”
Olivia returned to the kitchen. This family is so divided!
As they sat down to eat, Olivia looked around at her family. “Listen up guys, we need some changes around here. I was thinking about how when I was a kid, we watched TV together. We even talked about it afterwards…we enjoyed being together like that. I think we need some unity in this family.”
“Mom, you can’t expect me to sit and watch those stupid cartoons David watches!”
“Alright, Amanda, you don’t need to be so negative. I am just saying that we need to figure out how to be together more.”
“Mom, you watch your own shows, too!”
“Yes, I know, but there must be some way we can get closer to each other.”
Amanda stared at her plate until she suddenly looked up and said, “Mom, I’ve got it! How about we make our own television?”
“What? What do you mean?”
“Well, we can make up stories and video ourselves. I know how to edit them!”
“That’s sounds like a great idea! How about we get started tonight?”
“I’ve got a great idea. We can use my old toy ponies as narrators!"
"Why?"
Amanda laughed, "Because they've been around since you were a child!"
Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, ‘Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.
