There is only this moment. A thick fog mars my remembering yesterday, and my plans for tomorrow. Pain racks my upper body, but the lower I cannot feel at all. What has happened? Fear slithers in around my heart.
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder. . .
A song weaves itself through the agony. Yes. Beautiful, I can remember that hymn. Mmmmm. Good. Even now, Lord, you are awesome in wonder.
Consider all the works Thy hands have made.
Ohhh. Someone is trying to move me. Please don’t. Leave me alone.
I drift in and out of sleep. Out is better. Such torment. Help me, Lord. Yes, take a deep breath, in and out. I consider all the works of your hands.
Thank you, Lord. Thank you for all the memories I have now. My eyes may be closed, but I can see them all. Larry, my dearest one. Sarah and Jesse, my precious children. I see my beloved grandchildren, playing in the sunshine.
Lord, more grace. A pressing weight smothers the breath out of me. Such heaviness.
Then sings my soul, my savior God to Thee. How great Thou art. How great Thou art.
You want me to sing, Lord? Breathing has a price. I labor for my next moment in this existence and you want me to sing?
My eyes try to force their way open. I need light. I need to see. What is happening? Oh, a voice. A familiar voice.
“Mom. It’s me, Sarah. I’m here. Don’t be afraid. God is with us.” A tightness on my hand, a warmth. Comfort.
Something wet is running down my face. Am I crying? Now a tissue, soft and gentle.
“I love you, Mom.”
My mouth opens. “I. . .love. . .you.”
In the blink of an eye, a powerful presence erases my distress. My eyes open and I see a great and glorious light. No pain. No tears. A weightlessness lifts me up. Oh, blessed freedom. I hear a voice. It is mine! Now many voices fill the air!
Then sings my soul my savior God to thee. How great Thou art. How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, my savior God to thee. How great Thou art. How great Thou art.
