Not the new one my mother bought
Clean smelling leather and wheels
Something older, charity shop rescued
Already embracing a vow of poverty
Contents split fifty-fifty
Clothes and books
Smart black suits and polished shoes
Still resting in the wardrobe
Crime fiction favourites left in the bookcase
Head down, elbows resting on knees
I could be praying
Securing God’s blessing for my next step
Four years deciding, five years studying
Then ordination
My “Rich Young Ruler” Moment
I thought I’d escaped it
So sure of the priesthood
Now I sit counting the cost
I see myself in him walking away
I’m a beautiful boy, says my mother
Husband material, says my sister
I’d make a great dad, she adds
As I bounce her son on my knee
They shake bewildered heads
So much scandal, says my father
Not you, my boy…but others
Preying on choirboys and vulnerable widows
Weighed down by the dirt of confession
Be Jesus, if you must, in a normal job
“go and sell all your possessions
give the money to the poor
you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me."
And the rich young ruler walked away
All that I possess He gave me
He gave himself to the poor
He is my treasure always
He calls and I follow
And yet…
