“You should be going out with friends not planning your life around TV shows,” her mother said last night when they spoke on the phone. “You’re living in a cocoon. You’ve lost your nerve to live your life. It’s been a year Teresa — I’m only saying this because I love you.”
Teresa had convinced herself her life wasn’t so bad. Her burden wasn't as heavy as some people, it could be so much worse. She had a good job and a nice apartment. Forgiving her former fiance, Andrew, for ending their engagement a week before their nuptials, however, hadn't been easy. He assured her he loved her, but just couldn't marry her. He never gave any explanation why. She still cried about it from time to time, but God had let this happen and she accepted His will.
As soon as the bus stopped Teresa bolted off and ran in the direction of the train station. Thankfully there was a break in traffic for her to safely run across the street. Her wool jacket was unbuttoned and flapped in the wind as she ran. Her ponytail hadn't held well and pieces of her hair whipped around her face, but there was no time to stop. She rushed past people, jumped across puddles and skirted around other pedestrians. She was moving too fast and didn't notice a young boy holding his mother’s hand. Trying to go around him so not to run into him, she ending up losing her balance and fell forward. Then she felt the palms of her hands smacking against the pavement, her chin just missing the concrete. Lying in a pile on the ground horrified by what had happened, she looked up to see people’s feet walking around her. She pushed herself up and brushed her hair away from her face.
“Are you alright?” she heard a voice beside her.
“Yes, I’m fine,” she said wishing she could vaporize.
“Teresa?”
Oh no, she recognized that voice. It was Vinnie, her co-worker from accounting. She looked up to face him, his gorgeous green eyes met hers.
“Are you okay?” he said helping her to her feet.
“Yes, I’m fine.”
“You need to slow down!” the mother of the young boy chided Teresa and walked away with her son thankfully, unharmed.”
“I’m very sorry, ma’am,” Teresa called after her.
“You looked like you were in a big hurry,” Vinnie said.
“Yes, I need to be somewhere and now I’ll be really late,” she said bending over and rubbing her sore knees.
“Well, don’t let me keep you. Are you sure you’re okay?”
She felt guilty lying to him. “I was running home to watch Downton Abbey.”
“Oh.”
“And after that I am going to watch the movie, Singing in the Rain.”
“You like to watch TV?”
Her face reddened. She wanted to say, people on TV don’t break up with me and tell me that they don’t love me anymore. They’re safe and dependable, but instead she said, “Thanks for helping me. I’ll see you on Monday.”
“Wait! You would be perfect for Trivia Night tonight.”
“Trivia Night?”
“Yes, it’s at Hanlon’s pub. One of my team mates can’t make it and he’s our movie buff. I know it’s asking a lot, but do you think you could help us out? It’ll be a lot of fun.”
Suddenly watching Downton Abbey didn’t seem so important anymore. “I’m such a mess,” she said running her hand over her hair.
“You look perfectly fine to me.”
“Okay. I’ll do it.”
“Great,” he said and gave her a bear hug.
They walked in the direction of Hanlon’s.
“Thanks Teresa, you’re a lifesaver.”
She wanted to say ‘you too,’ but she just smiled instead.
