TITLE: Patch of Pansies | Previous Challenge Entry

Beneath my bedroom window
Managed to survive,
In spite of intense heat
From a sizzling sun.
Before spring arrived,
Marauding families of birds
Filched seeds from hanging baskets
Of white and purple pansies
And dropped them onto fertile ground
Beside azalea bushes.
A dozen or more clumps sprouted,
First into green leaves,
Then, delicate petals,
Before spreading out to become
A miniature flower garden.
As summer grew in warmth,
Many of the pansy plants
Shriveled and died,
With only six or so
Trying to stay alive.
That the remaining flowerings
Lasted through long days of
Bright summer sunshine
And hot temperatures
Was quite surprising.
Had no one told them that
Pansies can’t endure
Whole summers in the South?
Come August, only one plant was left,
Its purple florets sparking in the rain.
The thieving birds, busy again,
Dropped seeds from summer’s baskets
Of bright impatiens.
These grew quickly into blooms
Of red and orange,
Pink and white and lavender,
To surround the single patch of pansies.
I hope it can make it till winter again.

I just lost a plant to the heat of summer. My mom thought I was over watering it, so I stopped for a couple of days. The next time I saw it, all the leaves had turned brown and the few remaining buds were shriveled. It was rather amazing that this patch of pansies were able to survive.
