“Read this, Detective.”
“Just show it to me, Sergeant.”
I’M THINKING OF A CYBER-FAST
?
NO PHONE FOR A MONTH
r u nuts
CHECKED MESSAGES 153 X YESTERDAY
cool
CAN’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT. ADDICTED
so?
THIS THING IS A BALL AND CHAIN. NO FREEDOM.
it’s a drone helping you see the world
CAN’T EVEN TALK WITH MY GIRL ANYMORE
?
SHE SENDS OVER 100 TEXTS EVERY DAY – MOST TO OTHERS
are you afraid of competition?
NO – WE JUST DON’T TALK
I got selfies from both of you – you look happy
FAKED IT
The Detective looked up from the phone. “Nothing unusual. You think this is the preacher’s kid? What’s he doing in a place like this?”
if you cyber-fast how will you think?
NOT SURE – OTHERS HAVE DONE IT
what do you use your phone for?
GAMES, FACEBOOK, WEATHER, MAPS, WHATSAPP, DEVOTIONS, THE USUAL
80 billion messages get sent everyday through social media
SO?
people use phones for catching up, meetings, date requests, directions, exchanging phone numbers or addresses, communicating during a meeting, invitations, sharing photos, pics, jokes or ideas.
LIKE I SAID – A BALL AND CHAIN
got to get your money’s worth
EXACTLY
I need to save $ - texting is cheaper, convenient
THAT REMINDS ME – GOT TO TELL MY UBER DRIVER WHERE I AM – OK – I’M
BACK
where you going?
TO SEE YOU
I’m at the doctor
SICK?
fyi – she just said yes
WHAT?
oh, sorry, mixed up my texts – not sick – ordering pizza
“Nothing here suspicious,” the Sergeant uttered, “so the texter wanted pizza?”
The detective hunched his shoulders and crouched over to examine the messages. “What makes this strange is that we have no name for the one texting the kid. Must be a burner phone.”
“What’s a preacher’s kid doing riding with UBER? And who was the erroneous message for? We’ve got to track this down.”
“What else does it say?”
UBER IS HERE – HOW ARE THINGS WITH THE DOC?
said I’ll heal
WHAT’S UP?
walked into a pole while texting – fell down some stairs – got knocked down by a bike
YOU CONVINCED ME – CYBERFAST FOR MY SAFETY AND HEALTH
if you cyberfast how will you read your bible?
GOOD QUESTION
how will you donate to church or charity?
ANOTHER GOOD QUESTION
how will you wake up in the morning without your alarm?
OKAY – YOU GOT ME
leaving the doc
GOOD – SEND ME YOUR DOCS ADDRESS
sent – meet you at Starbucks
GOOD – GOT IT
“There’s no address,” the detective muttered. “It’s like someone deleted it.”
“I gotta stand up.” The Sergeant picked up the phone, planted one size 12 foot and stretched his six-foot frame up to full height. He rotated his shoulders and then walked toward the dim light shining above a formica table top. He set the phone down on the table and waited for the Detective to join him.
The Detective laid the Yankees cap on the table next to the phone. He positioned himself beside the Sergeant and looked again at the messages. “You think this texter could be someone religious, from the same church?”
“Could be a predator hooking his prey on-line. Maybe scammed just enough info off a Facebook page to lure him on. Let’s finish this stream.”
been here five minutes – where are you
AT STARBUCKS
so am I
WHERE
at the counter
I’M BY THE DOOR
don’t see you
BLACK SHIRT – JEANS
wait – do I know you?
I’M NOT SURE – WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?
yankees cap – yellow shirt
“That’s it?”
“Looks that way, Detective.” The Sergeant snatched the phone up and used his thumb to scroll through a selection of texts. “Nothing else suspicious.” He laid the phone down again.
“Well, we have the Yankees cap. We can check it for DNA.”
The phone vibrated and danced its way half an inch across the table. Words appeared on the screen.
NO PHONE – NO BRAIN
The letters on the screen evaporated.
“What’s happening?” the Detective asked.
“It’s gone,” the Sergeant replied. “All the messages disappeared.”
“Without the texts we’ve got no way to track the truth.”
“On the contrary,” the Sergeant declared, finger against his temple. “Like the empty tomb - we’ve got just enough evidence to find the truth.”
