Those days when I was just a child
So many years ago,
I thought I’d never marry, but
I might get me a beau.

I watched my mama working hard.
She had so much to do—
Cleaning, cooking, washing clothes
Each day the whole week through.

I saw no need for making beds
On each new morning when
At night we’d climb right back inside
And go to sleep again.

All the tedious chores she did
To care for family
Were pointless and without reward,
Or so it seemed to me.

Then I grew up and met my prince,
And soon there was a marriage.
Then just the way the old song goes—
Next came the baby carriage.

I never thought I’d take such pride
In spotless kitchen floor
While knowing there would soon be spills
To dirty it once more,

And after labor at the stove
To feed my family,
To see their pleasure in the meal
Would be reward for me.

But I know now what Mama did.
I learned it in years since.
Though housework can be boring work,
Love makes the difference.
