Understanding Delay

Another sunset:
night’s fast covering gloom
descending once more
on an empty room.

Another sunset
emphasising, slow,
the anguish of
the mystery of ‘no’.

Yet piercing through
the grey, one thread of gold:
remembrance of a promise,
solid, old:
‘Call unto Me’
(and did we not so? –
we sent a message
four long days ago.)

‘Call unto Me,
and I will answer you’
(we’ve waited,
how we’ve yearned
that this be true.
We needed you,
your help,
your divine power,
in our distress
this sad bereavement hour.
But aching eyes
and silenced cry, now dumb,
cannot begin to grasp –
you did not come.)

Another sunrise,
heralding new day.
Then, through the wail of death
we hear one say:
‘He’s here!’
and dragging, shuffling feet take wing
to fly to Him
with anguished suffering.

And all the ‘ifs’
Of sorrow, loss and grief;
And all our tears of
Pain and unbelief
Bow your pure heart
with suffering so deep
That overflows in love
And eyes that weep.


The sunrises, the sunsets
Of past days,
The waiting
And the pain of yesterdays
Recede with shame
And quickly skulk away
As, with repentant heart
We hear you say
‘Did I not tell you,
Did you not conceive,
That if you trusted
If you could believe,
You’d see, revealed,
To you – as you surrender -
God’s Glory In
fullest resplendent splendour.’

We stand before
The tight-sealed cave where death
Commands her power
O’er life and time and breath.
Then, at His word
The stone is pushed aside
Revealing all once hidden
And sealed inside.
And with the word that
Shatters every doubt
He loudly calls, with power
‘Lazarus Come Out’

Call unto me
And I will answer and
show you much more
That you can understand.
