Suddenly, his big cheesy grin changed into a cute pout and ended with crocodile tears. “I don’t want you to leave, Gramma.”
How could I resist that face? Those baby blue eyes? “I have to.”
He held onto my neck with every bit of his strength. “Will you miss me?”
I pried his fingers off me so I could look into his face. “I miss you already.”
He grabbed me again and held me tighter than ever before. “Will you come back?”
“I’ll come back. I promise. And you’ll come to Gramma and Grammpa’s house.”
My keys were in my hand. My shoes on. The car packed. I sat him down on the front steps. “Hey. Do you trust me? Don’t I always come to your house?” I poked his belly and he giggled.
“Yes. I trust you.” He wiped away tears.
“Do you trust me when I tell you to jump into the pool – that it’s fun?”
He got a serious face like only a 3 year old can. “No!”
I checked the time on my phone and knew I had to cut our goodbye short. I kissed him on one cheek and then the other.
“No Gramma. Like this!” He took his toddler hands and squished my cheeks together. “*Ugga mugga!.” He burrowed into my face with his and then we rubbed noses. Our souls touched for a second.
“Ugga mugga, my brave tiger. I’ll be seeing you soon.”
He stood at his mama’s side and waved until I was out of the drive.
“I pray you will always put your trust in God, Little Buddy. I’ll fail you, but God never will.” I wiped away tears as I drove away and whispered, “Ugga mugga.”
*Ugga mugga is a phrase from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood – the PBS series my grandsons watch which is a spin-off of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood that my kids used to watch. Daniel Striped Tiger used to rub noses with Lady Aberlin and say, “Ugga mugga.” And now, Daniel Tiger does it to his parents. So cute.
