Two thousand years apart
We grasp the chance to make a meal
Parade the hostess heart
We will not choose but simple fare
A feast we must provide
From starters, mains and lush deserts
We both refuse to hide
We top and tail, and chop and mince
We stir a pot or five
To make the meal a special one
We sweat. We curse. We strive
To us He speaks, our gentle guest
Such wise and sage advice
“Your menu’s far too big,” he says,
“Make soup – that will suffice.”
We need to sit, to rest, to chat
Relax, unwind and chill
To let His words soak into us
To stop, be calm and still
Occupied with household tasks
We feel ourselves secure
Our roles defined, our boundaries drawn
We seldom look for more
We frown at Mary’s chosen path
Her place at Jesus’ feet
“In that domain for men alone
There is no woman’s seat.”
Our niche carved out is far too small
Its limits? Not His own
He says to us that Mary stays
It’s His call – His alone
What others do? We should not fret
Their lives aren’t ours to fill
He gives His gifts, His grace to share
His love to overspill
