And thunder of the deep;
Men cry out, lashed by salty spray,
While Jesus lies asleep—
“Master, carest Thou not that we perish?”
When Canaan's daughter cried to Him,
“Have mercy on me, Lord!”
He heard her plea, but silence kept
And answered not a word.
Master, carest Thou not that she perish?
His road I walk, my cross I take;
He charged me to obey.
How can He leave me fainting here,
Unarmed, for Satan's prey?
Master, carest Thou not that I perish?
The chains and darkness have no name,
Nor face to be defied.
While demons fight to damn my soul,
Each sin is magnified.
Master, carest Thou not that I perish?
At my defense, friends turned from me;
None stood to plead my cause.
Hands of a Judas, breaking bread,
Have left betrayal's scars.
Master, carest Thou not that I perish?
I trust His Word, I keep His laws;
Yet, like that furious sea,
The keening wind and surge of breakers
Howl, destroying me.
Master, carest Thou not that I perish?
All things will work for good to them
Who trust His steadfast heart;
Though I recite a hundred times,
I fear His grace departs.
Master, carest Thou not that I perish?
He touched the sick and gave them life;
Hell fled before I AM.
The wind became a holy calm,
Waves ceasing at his hand.
Master, carest Thou not that I perish?
He slays me still, but I must trust
His word toward me is good.
Though dark my way toward Heaven's shore,
He paid my debt with blood.
Master, carest Thou not that I perish?
His touch, if only I will plead,
Can heal what I have been.
Would mercy rain on even me,
And would He make me clean?
Master, carest Thou not that I perish?
He speaks through darkness, “Peace, be still”,
And pain draws to an end.
Knelt at His feet, I hear His words,
“I will—now be Thou cleansed.”
