We filed into the room
Each to our allocated chair and table
With uncertainty immeasurable
I stare at the paper
My thoughts turn to vapour
Question one – two – or three?
Arrrgh – Woe is me!
It’s now too late to study
So I glance at my buddy.
In his own little world
To the task he has hurled
Himself without holding back
By contrast I feel so slack.
His pen is smoking,
But mine – well, I’m choking.
This battle I must fight ,
But what can I write -
Apart from my name?
For to my shame
I find
This exam has declined
To explore whatever I know
Instead,
The questions head
For uncharted waters
That flood me with “oughtas.”
I oughta have worked harder;
Or tried wearing Prada
Or maybe a dress
(Under great duress.)
Then a mental spark,
Breaks open the dark.
For though on this subject my mind is blank
I could write to thank
The examiner
And show him/her some stamina.
To whom it may concern…
Dear Whom; you’ll see I have much to learn.
Yet before my course ends
I hope to make friends
With this subject of great mystery –
Which I think is ancient history.
And within that friendship,
Could I possibly slip
You a question or two
About stuff that I knew?
That would be much more fun.
But I can’t say any more, ’cause our time sadly is done.

Please don't wear a dress,
I'll hazard a guess,
You've got knobbly knees
And you'll feel a slight breeze,
And as for your spark
That divided the dark,
It will glow far and wide
Then your dress you can't hide,
We will laugh from afar
'Cos we know who you are,
Then we'd have to confess
You look daft in a dress,
So stick with the 'oughtas'
From the tutor that taughtyas!
And don't give up the day job just yet. Ha!
Don't look now, but the poet in your pen is smoking to get out!
