Now before you think I’m some crazy exhibitionist or nudist enthusiast, hear me out. (Men, you can tune out actually, this is really for the women. I think. Correct me if I’m wrong.)
It appears that most of us walk into church so ‘covered up’ that our true selves are unapproachable. We fuss over what to wear, the cowlick that won’t sit down or that massive zit that always seems to mature sometime between midnight Saturday and 8AM Sunday.
Greeting our friend in the foyer, we praise her on how wonderful she looks, mercifully ignoring the cheerios stuck to her sweater or the fact that she is wearing two different shoes, (unbeknownst to her as she is ten months pregnant and hasn’t seen her feet in a season). As we watch her waddle towards the washroom, we catch a glance of ourselves in the big plate window.
Why did I wear this sweater? What was I thinking?
Sigh.
We come together to worship. Not ourselves, not each other . . . Him.
When are we going to figure that out?
Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. 1 Peter 3:3-4 ESV
Our hearts are good towards our friends. We overlook the obvious because we see the sweet soul above the unmatched soles. Why can’t we show ourselves the same grace?
Perhaps someday with some maturity . . . in the meantime I will refrain from the temptation to strip down for church and instead pull off the mask to show the real me underneath.
