Was well known to all far and near,
The pews were full January to Advent
With worshippers moral, sincere.
Harmonious singing and praising,
The hymns new and old, and anthems
Rang out with such zeal, almost raising
The roof of the Church of St Clem’s.
One Sunday, the Service had started,
Each head was bowed quietly in prayer,
When the back-porchway curtain just parted:
And a hesitant figure stood there.
The young man moved forward quite slowly,
All watched with a deepening frown,
But the upright, the decent, the holy,
Made no room for the youth to sit down.
The dreadlocks, the jeans torn in tatters,
Didn’t fit in this place clean and true.
True rev’rence is surely what matters.
Oh, what was St Clem’s coming to?
The stranger, did not seem to worry,
Though murmurs were hard to ignore,
But quietly, with no sense of hurry,
He sat on the raised platform floor.
Oh what a great consternation,
Nothing like this had happened before!
Perplexed were the whole congregation
By unkemptness stretched out on the floor.
Whispered counsel, and one was selected
Who’d know just the right thing to do.
A senior Elder, respected,
Pillar of the community too.
Purposeful, quiet and stately,
He walked to the front with slow pace,
All trusted his wise judgement greatly,
Then Church could continue in peace.
You could knock them down with a feather!
Just no-one could believe what they saw:
The Elder and stranger together
Sat side by side on the floor.
Outward appearance unnoticed
They sat there in oneness complete,
On God’s Holy Word purely focussed,
Like Mary at Jesus’ feet .
Two sinners, two hearts trusting Jesus,
Both wanting to learn more His Way,
One who’d been saved for a long time,
The other, for just one short day.
The Holy Church of St Clement
Continue to grow and to learn
How to live with a Godly discernment
Of far-reaching love and concern.
(The name Clement means Mercy!)
