It’s where the other side of the fence calls to more than one
With promises of enhanced forbidden grass
And how we judge some un-ripeness better left to grow.
Green’s a metaphor aimed at youthful ignorance
Of naiveté in a human not yet matured,
Of unworldliness borne of rural innocence
Or from meticulous protection from reality.
Though many Irish raise a few in honor of
A saint who had a cause and saved the day
Myth insists that UFOs carry little men
Not from shamrock happy Ireland--but from outer space.
It is the kitchen paint that promised light sea foam
But delivered dark sea weed; Of 70s appliances tinted avocado
Or the color of my love’s true hair after frolic in the pool
Or on purpose as a statement.
Green can dazzle like emeralds or jade
And offer us health-- from spinach to olives
Some shades can soothe a bundle of nerves
Or tint our faces on a choppy ocean voyage.
Sometimes, not on purpose, cheap jewelry leaves its tell-tale mark while
Paper money claims to be greenback; but what’s the top side of a frog?
Lizards, Geckos, and those nasty Crocs present in a verdant hue
And green snakes claim they’re harmless, but we panic anyway.
Some swear the key to yummy pie down south may lie in limes
But Granny Smith contends with apples as American as Mom
And the sprouts of herbs or mint jump-start a dish
From soup to fish and other food ho-hum.
Green became a symbol of your environmental friend
As if it had been waiting quietly to be found
From recycling to growing vegetables organic
A thing my grandma did without direction.
Heaven may have pavement made of gold…we’re told
But paradise to me would be a sky of crystal blue that hovers over luscious grass--
The kind for running through or resting in;
For smelling and smiling, and for chewing on.
The Lord is our Shepherd so we should not want
Because He welcomes us to sanctuaries cool
Where our souls are invited to lie down in pastures to be restored
While we wait with happy anticipation…
…and contemplate His rainbow.
