It stands ‘bout eight feet tall,
So many ornaments are hung
I cannot count them all.
It’s time to do my duty
And remove them from the tree
My favorite part of Christmastime,
This job belongs to me!
First the squishy red ones
On branches near the floor,
This job is so much fun
It can’t be called a chore.
Next, a painted pine cone
Then a candy cane,
A Styrofoam ball that says,
“Made with love by Jane.”
A wooden train with blue chipped paint
That Jimmy made in school
So many awesome ornaments...
Each one a precious jewel!
Paper snowflakes, metal trumpets,
Shepherds, stars, three wise men,
Angels, stockings, mini wreaths,
Toy soldiers – I counted ten!
I observe the tree with interest,
The bottom half now bare
I look up toward the star on top.
It’s time to use the chair.
My favorite ornaments are next -
The porcelain balls that shine.
Each one’s a different color
With a precise, unique design.
But as I stand upon the chair
I hear someone slam the door.
Before I’m rudely interrupted,
I must remove one more.
I turn back toward the tree
And reach for another ball.
The tree, it suddenly starts swaying
Oh no…it’s going to fall!
I leap away just as the tree
crashes to the ground.
The ornaments they scatter,
making quite a lovely sound.
In the doorway stands the lady
Hands planted on her hips
Forehead scrunched and eyes a-blazing,
Words forming on her lips.
“Sir Elliot the Third…
just look what you have done!
What took me hours to put together,
In seconds, you’ve undone!”
The lady is correct, of course,
I certainly would agree.
The room is now in shambles
As is her precious tree.
I stand up tall and proud,
And belt a loud MEOW,
It takes everything within me
Not to take a great big bow.
The lady wags a finger
I guess that means no treat.
I lift my head and prance right by.
My job here is complete.
