Later that evening, she watched the city lights blink from a high-rise window, a grid of tiny demands flashing in the dark. On her desk, her laptop screen glowed with the analytics dashboard for “Dust, Dishes, and Devotion”.
The digital ministry she built from scratch was exploding, pulling in millions of views. A new notification flashed: her book on Christian leadership was a bestseller.
Maya knew she should rest. Her leather prayer journal sat nearby, completely blank and waiting. But the digital wheel kept turning. Instead of unplugging, she reached for the mouse. She chose the hum of the screen over the quiet of her soul.
Her chaotic pace stood in stark contrast to her sister, Maria. Earlier that afternoon, Maria had sat on a park bench just to listen to a crying friend. Later, she volunteered at the youth shelter, feeding children who needed a warm meal. To the fast-paced world—and to Maya—this quiet life looked dangerously like a waste of potential.
Their two worlds collided on a rainy Tuesday evening. Maria had invited Maya over for dinner to force her to take a break. Maya burst through the door like a whirlwind. She immediately claimed the kitchen counter, squeezing her laptop right beside Maria's cutting board.
In a blur of nervous energy, Maya's fingers danced between chopping vegetables and typing the manuscript for her upcoming project.
"Maya," Maria said softly. She slid a warm hand over Maya’s fingers, stopping them on the keys. "The work is finished. Close the screen."
Maya froze. A sharp heat tightened behind her ribs. It was the weight of a decade's worth of bone-deep exhaustion suddenly pressing against the backs of her eyes, heavy and demanding.
"If I stop, Maria," Maya whispered, the words splintering in her throat. "If I stop, everything falls apart."
Maria looked at her, a warm mug cradled in her palms. Her eyes held no judgment, only a deep, quiet sorrow for her sister.
"Maya," she said gently. "The world already has a Savior. He isn't waiting for you to finish His job. He's just waiting for you to rest."
The silence that rushed into the room felt heavy, like a sudden drop in air pressure. Maya half-expected her entire life to crumble without her constant management.
Her fingers twitched in her lap, still holding the muscle memory of typing, aching to chase one more deadline.
She had forced herself to shut down, waiting for the sudden rush of peace Maria always talked about. Instead, she just felt empty.
She looked down at the half-chopped vegetables on the counter. Suddenly, she saw herself clearly—a modern Martha, rushing around to make everything perfect, so busy doing things for Jesus that she forgot to actually exist with Him.
She had tied her entire worth to the length of her to-do list. For years, Maya had preached about grace to millions, treating it like a product to sell while never actually giving it to herself.
Now, looking from her dark laptop screen to Maria’s calm face, the truth finally hit her in the quiet rhythm of the ticking clock. The universe, and God, were doing just fine without her management. She did not need to work every second of the day to be loved or valued.
A new feeling washed over her. It was grace—unearned, unhurried, a free gift of acceptance requiring no checkboxes.
Her shoulders finally dropped. She let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for years. Leaning her head back against the couch cushion, she closed her eyes and let the darkness just be darkness, not another to-do list.
