Think of it this way: A loving parent sets boundaries for a child, not to take away freedom, but to protect them from danger. In the same way, every command God gave in the Hebrew Scriptures was an expression of His loving heart. He knows what brings life and what brings destruction, and His laws teach us the best way to live.
The commandments instructed God's people how to worship Him, treat one another with justice and compassion, care for the vulnerable, and live holy lives. They reflected His character and revealed His desire for His people to flourish. The law was never meant to be a burden but a guide, showing what life looks like when it is lived according to God's design.
At the same time, the law reveals something about us. It acts like a mirror, exposing our sin and reminding us that we cannot meet God's perfect standard on our own. As Paul wrote,
"Therefore, no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin." (Romans 3:20 NIV)
This is where God's love shines most brightly.
God did not leave us condemned by a standard we could never keep. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the law perfectly. Jesus said,
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." (Matthew 5:17 NIV)
Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection, He accomplished what we never could. By faith in Him, we receive forgiveness, righteousness, and new life.
But God's moral instruction did not lose its value. Instead, our relationship with it changed. We no longer obey to earn God's favor; we obey because we have already received His love through Christ. The Holy Spirit now works within us, giving us the desire and ability to live in ways that please Him.
When asked which commandment was the greatest, Jesus gave a remarkable answer:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37–40 NIV)
The apostle Paul expressed the same truth in one simple sentence:
" Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law." (Romans 13:10 NIV)
Think about it. If you truly love God, you will desire to honor Him. If you genuinely love your neighbor, you will not steal, lie, murder, commit adultery, or covet what belongs to them. Love naturally produces the kind of life God's commandments describe.
Our culture often defines love as accepting whatever people choose. God's love is different. His love always seeks what is true, righteous, and best. Sometimes real love warns, corrects, and calls us to change because it desires our good; every command God has given flows from that kind of love.
The Hebrew Scriptures remain a priceless gift because they reveal God's holy character and His wisdom for living. They point us to our need for a Savior, and they help us understand the heart of the One who gave them. Jesus did not replace God's love with grace; He demonstrated that grace has always been an expression of God's love.
When we read God's Word through the lens of His love, the commandments become more than rules. They become a portrait of our Father's heart and an invitation to walk in His ways.
Love has always been God's purpose. It was the reason He gave the law, the reason He sent His Son, and the reason He pours His Spirit into the hearts of those who trust Him. As we grow in love for God and for others, we discover that God's commands are not heavy burdens but pathways to the abundant life He has always desired for His children.
Indeed, love fulfills the law.
