All one must do is get around little kids for awhile to be reminded of what makes for a “cheerful heart.” First, children have a great sense of curiosity. To them, each new day is an unspoiled opportunity for adventure. Discovering and learning new things is what their young lives are all about.
Joy comes with the wonder of Christmas or playing with a new toy. It comes with sitting on Grandpa’s lap, helping him drive the tractor around the yard for the first time. It comes with the ding, ding, ding, and the flashing lights at the railroad crossing, hearing that whistle sound and the anticipation of seeing that massive engine pass by right in front of your eyes. Joy comes with just about anything that sparks the imagination: Princesses, pirates, dragons, forts, sword-fighting, superheroes and even flying elephants. And the adventures of life are of course, best experienced with a friend; a best friend or even a new friend just made on the playground. The only thing better than discovery is discovering it with a friend.
Accomplishment is another aspect in the life of a child that begets a cheerful heart. Just watch their face as they score their first goal on their new soccer team or when they come out of that VBS class glowingly revealing their prized craft they worked so hard to put together. Throw a little danger into the mix and it’s all the more satisfying. You may never witness a greater smile that that of a child who reached the summit of the giant rock formation you found on your hike or conquered the “rapids” on their innertube or successfully dismounted off that ridiculously high and scary looking rope-swing at the local swimming hole. These are the things that hold the thrill of life for a child.
But then the child grows up, and with age comes the crucible of experience. Doubt and timidity slowly evolve into the slumber of hesitancy and before you know it the thrill of life has washed away. So then, how does one prevent that from being their story? How do you keep the thrill alive and stoke the fires of a “cheerful heart” on into adulthood?
Perhaps we should take our queue from the pro’s. Be courageous, meet new people, try new things…you are never too old for a little adventure! Ask God to rekindle your imagination and then above all, find someone you enjoy to do it with — living, laughing, and loving ‘till the end. If all else fails though…If you just cannot get there, find a way to put yourself in the company of those little adventurers, they are sure to inspire. That’s good medicine for the soul.
