What if you found a treasure? What would you do with it? Put it in a bank, bury it, or find another safe place? Literature is full of stories of strangely deposited wealth and those that seek for it.
According to Readers’ Digest, a wealthy casino heir supposedly buried a silver collection worth several million dollars somewhere on his ranch. He died over twenty years ago, and despite some silver being found, many believe there is still more there, and continue to search.
Over five million dollars is part of a pirate’s treasure reported to be buried at Hawaii’s Palemano Point—an exposed reef off Hawaii’s Big Island. And of course there are still those searching for Blackbeard’s treasures. He was executed in 1718, and treasure seekers have continued to search everywhere from Virginia’s Chesapeak Bay south to the Cayman Islands, but no one has been successful.
So, get your metal detector, shovel, or just put your problem-solving mind to work—there is treasure to be found!
What does God’s Word teach us about treasure? Matthew 6:21 admonishes, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”
How do we store up treasure in Heaven? Paul tells us in his first letter to Timothy, “Command them to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age…”. I’ll let you think about how you would go about fulfilling this charge.
If looking for treasure is something you are interested in, go for it! But when you find it, know what to do with it. Protect it from moths, rust, and thieves. Heaven is the best bank I know of for depositing treasure!
