He did not look up when his father admonished him. “I tried to tell you you were wasting time chasing that teacher all over Galilee.”
Jaydon jerked to attention and peered at his father. “You don’t understand. You didn’t see what I saw. And I only went to Galilee when work was slow. There was something about him that was just...just different. I heard him teach, I saw people healed, demons cast out, and just last week my friend, Lazarus, was brought back to life! I know for a fact that Lazarus was dead.”
Dropping his voice, Jaydon lamented, “I was so sure he was about to set up his kingdom. When Jesus rode into Jerusalem a few days ago, the crowd was in a frenzy, ready to make him king. Then he was arrested and treated as a common criminal. The so-called trial was a mockery.”
Jayden cringed when his father asked, “What happened to all his followers?”
“Gone,” Jadon spoke quietly. “Even his disciples all left him, except John.”
Reaching for a cup of goats’ milk, Jaydon continued, “I couldn’t stand to look at him there on that wretched cross. He had been beaten and looked so dejected.” Jaydon shook his head in exasperation, then went on, “I was standing back a ways, along with some of the women; they were inconsolable. Just before he died he cried out loudly, ‘It is finished!’ I heard it clearly. I keep asking myself what did he mean by that. What was finished? Was he referring to his life, his plans? Our hope? What?”
“And that earthquake along with the darkness was especially unsettling. Quite unusual. Later I heard a rumor that the veil in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom! There are so many unanswered questions.”
He tried to focus on what his father was saying. “Well, now you can stay at home and spend more time working in the vineyard. I was hoping you could take over sometime soon.”
Hardly acknowledging his father’s comment, Jadon grimaced and continued, “I watched Nicodemus and Joseph take Jesus’ body down from the cross and wrap it in burial cloths. I followed them to the grave and watched until the stone was sealed. I thought my heart would burst. Knowing there was nothing else to do, I came on home. But I can’t sleep or quit thinking about the last three years.”
Jadon rubbed his furrowed brow. “What did He mean? What was done? I wish I knew more.”

The next morning Jaydon ran home from the market and burst through the door. “Father! I have heard unbelievable rumors this morning.” His eyes were wide and his hands gestured animatedly as he gushed, “I can’t get my head around it! I have to know more. Some of the followers are meeting this evening. I must join them and find out what they think and plan to do.”
Jaden saw fear in his father’s eyes as he warned, “Be careful, son. Be careful.”
To find out what happened at that meeting, and learn more about what was finished, read Luke 24 and the Book of Acts.
