when your graduation gown
skimmed along the sidewalk
as you rushed to catch up with friends,
hugging under cherry blossoms
blowing in the wind,
dropping petals like
pink snowflakes in June
a smile taped on your face,
posing for pictures,
developed later from rolls of film
capturing your stage presence.
You told everyone about your future plans.
You told no one about me;
I didn’t exist,
was a mistake not part of those plans.
The sky shattered that year.
You packed your college dorm kit
a magenta polka dotted quilt,
matching sheets and laundry bin
a down coat for traipsing across campus
on frigid days upstate New York.
a picture collage of your family’s camping trips.
This important year,
beginning so much,
ending so much.
I lived there for two and a half months,
twirling in your thoughts
and growing within you,
faster than you knew;
My heart beat
stronger each day
pumping blood throughout
an intricate maze of vessels
trying to survive though
pronounced guilty of inconvenience,
guilty of bad timing and
sentenced to death.
I would have been a Christmas present,
born at the end of the year.
I would have loved you
and given you a reason to live
to care, to color
to bike to the park
and have tea parties
with teddy bears.
I would have loved you
the smell of you, a field of lilacs
and vanilla lattes,
your soothing voice when thunder roared
the touch of your gentle fingers
braiding my hair like woven lace,
your smile and your scars.
I would have sung,
growing melodies like flowers,
filling the air with sweet notes for the ears.
I would have inherited your creative mind,
your hazel eyes, your stubborn spirit.
I would have wanted to please you,
graduate with honors, make a difference
with this life…
That year changed what could have been.
I don't blame you;
you didn’t know what you were doing.
You will hear accusers
and accuse yourself;
you will miss
what you never knew
and wonder if
it was a different year,
would you have held me in your arms?
You will always carry
this question in your belly.
when you feel unworthy of joy,
God still loves you.
shame and regret won’t exist
when we meet in His presence.
The year of forgiveness
will never end.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39 NIV
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4 NIV
