The moon,
Almost as pregnant as me,
glows in the purple sky with the rising sun
still hidden;
moonlight splashes my watch to see the numbers turn
reckless minutes.
We drive the back roads, empty at five AM,
the quickest route to the ER.
My hair, still damp, fills our Subaru with
a tropical coconut scent.
We have done this before, but
it is not the same. The same doctor who said,
“Take a walk. You have a while to go,” says, “Hurry! Go to the hospital pronto.”
Someone squeezes my belly
With a giant wrench
Twisting open a stubborn cap
Intense
pain
pulling me
inside out…
baby is in a rush to see the world
during baseball season—so unlike his brother taking his time,
meandering to life on a hot summer day—drive faster!
Passing Lindell Deli, Waldbaums,
Yummy Yummy Restaurant, Dunkin Donuts,
Red light, green light, one two three
Please change please change stay green
Go. The wrench tightens around my beach ball waist
Every minute another traffic light turning yellow—
Go, don’t stop. My slow-driving, cautious husband races through
red, don’t stop. Trying to love in pain trying
to be calm, trying to give thanks in all circumstances, trying not to scream
trying not to hate everything—
the peach room, the counting clock, ABC News on a hanging TV
Pain.
No pain.
And just
like
that
the hurricane blows away
by the hands of God
delivering another unique miracle;
and I hold our baby curled in my arms,
a baby with huge green eyes and lashes like feathers.
Amazing gift from heaven
Pain suffered for a life to be born—
A rippled reflection of Christ’s love.
I see how much I am loved.
