(If you know what I mean),
Relevant or irrelevant,
They all make up one team.
Families that are descendants,
Related by their blood;
Or families interrupted,
Lines blurred like so much mud.
Genealogical records
Intermingle through time;
Family trees intersected,
Dissected broken rhymes.
Marriage, divorce, or adoption,
Throwing the lines off course,
Assembling, dissembling
Actions chosen or forced.
Now there are often disruptions,
Deepened roots are severed;
Ancestral lineages broken
Mended and re-tethered.
Morals have become outdated,
Drawn lines have now turned grey
As in-laws change into bylaws,
Boundaries not obeyed.
Father, mother, sister, brother;
Uncle, aunt, nephew, niece,
Gather in our mem’ries
Before they are deceased.
History of our dynasties,
Written heritages,
Declaring the obvious truths
Of our own parentages.
Half-brothers, half-sisters, half-kin
Dissect the lines anew.
Adding relationship members,
Re-melded and accrued.
Cousins—firsts, seconds, thirds or fourths
Shared roots that unite us
Close in age, younger or older,
Values low or highest.
Relatives are oft the examples
In our sphere of vision.
To follow or not to follow—
It is our decision.
Grand and great mothers and fathers
Granddaughters and grandsons;
They all have their places assigned
In families homespun.
Mentors, leaders, miscreants, too—
Long branches on our trees,
Black sheep, white sheep, menageries,
Blessings or tragedies.
There is a group of relatives
Spawned by holier vines:
Sons and daughters, sisters, brothers
Spiritual hearts entwined.
The family of God devotes
Allegiance to each one;
Birthing and producing blossoms
Bound by divining love.
Relatives can be relative
(Now you know what I mean)
Roots human or spiritual,
They all make up one team.
