See, I had this dream the other night. It was one of them dreams with God in it; so I figured you’re the right guy to explain it to me.
So, in the dream I’m walking down this road and I got this humongous back pack on my back. I’m not exactly a backpack kind of guy so I stopped to check it out. When I took it off, I saw the backpack had a label on it that spelled out the words, “your burdens”
My burdens? Yeah, I got my problems; same as the next guy. Call ‘em whatever you want: trials, challenges, stress... Yeah, I got this backbreaking job, a ton of bills, a wife who thinks I have unlimited credit cards, a mortgage payment it’s gonna take a miracle to pay; and my doctor says I need to lose 50 pounds.
Garden variety stuff, right Pastor? Nothing to cry about; that’s for sure. My Dad raised us kids to believe when life gives us challenges, a real man just handles them. No crying or moping about it. When God hands me a challenge, I figure it’s my job to suck it up and deal with it.
Right?
So, in the dream, there’s this big long line of people. They got backpacks too, but theirs are sitting on the ground. I wanna figure out what’s going on, so I go closer. When I get there, I see people walking up to Someone Who’s gotta be God. I mean: he’s got this real big, shiny halo, a white robe and a long grey beard. Yeah, the whole nine yards.
As I watch, the people in the line hand God their backpacks. He takes the backpacks and then touches each one of them on the shoulders. I can’t help but notice; this makes everyone look suddenly more relaxed. And then, God gives them each back their backpacks. When they walk away, they all got their backpacks trailing behind them - as if they are suspended in the air.
I ask the guy at the end of the line what’s up. He says the people are there to give their burdens to God. He says God is now bearing their burdens. He even tells me the Bible says we’re supposed to do that. Can you believe it?
I mean: c’mon. Are they all a bunch of wussies? A man takes what God gives him to bear and he bears it. Right?? There’s that Bible verse that says God don’t give us more than we can bear, so I must be supposed to handle my burdens by myself.
Oh, yeah? That verse is about temptation? Hmm. I thought it was about challenges. Well, for sure our burdens have gotta be ours to deal with.
So, yeah, pastor. That was my dream. So, whaddya suppose it means? Surely it don’t mean I’m supposed to let God carry my burdens. Does it? I mean: that just don’t seem right.
Right?
