Place it here, under the spotlight
A harsh glare perhaps that softens nothing
Every blemish picked out and obvious
A first glance and I’m not that excited
It doesn’t dazzle, it doesn’t astonish
It’s rather dull with no glitter to catch the eye
It’s just clay, I believe. All dirt and ashes
It’s smaller than I expected – little, limited
Narrow in its vision and hostile in its nature
A greedy creature that stamps and snatches
It collects grudges and polishes resentments
Finer things; brighter things furnish creation
And yet all of creation is but the frame for this
Wonderfully made? Surely an exaggerated claim!
A poor choice I think yet He bestows His image
What does He see in humanity that I am blind to?
As stained and soiled as people are He loves them
He sees the possibilities, the new that isn’t yet there
He calls to the what-will-be – the warrior in the coward
He pays an irrational price to stake His claim
And bathes them in blood and water
He climbs inside and inhabits each one
Oh and how they dazzle – His light in them burning

As I read the other day:
"Only a trained eye can appreciate the true value of a diamond. The naked eye is unable to discern the diamond’s worth—its cut, carats, clarity and color.”
Your poem expressed this sentiment beautifully.
