“I trust you.”
“I trust you.”
The words rang as empty echoes in my mind. I had said them, thought them, cried them so many times that they were almost meaningless. And yet, I kept saying them. They were, after all, the reason I was here. And now, they were my only hope of escape.
Shivering in the cold, damp air, I looked around for him again. Why, I’m not sure. It’s like going back to the refrigerator for the second or third time in an hour, hoping that something new will have somehow materialized there. He was gone. I followed him here with the hope of something better – no, he promised me something better…and now he was gone. My guide had left me here alone in this cold, dark, foreign wilderness with no clue how to get out.
We had come a long way already, the two of us. It was rough and I had scars, but we made it through. So, why would he do this to me now? Was it to make a fool of me? Was he trying to teach me to never trust anyone, including him, again? I felt the hot tears starting to flow again, in sharp contrast to the coldness all around me.
“I trust you.”
The words wouldn’t leave my mind. It was as though they now taunted me for having any kind of faith at all. Did I really trust him? I didn’t know anymore. He said he would never leave me and then-
What was that?
There were footsteps, slow and methodical at first, then rapidly growing closer, like someone was running toward me. I trembled, not knowing what to do. Who was it and what could they want? I was completely defenseless here. Maybe this was the end. All my striving and hoping and praying and trusting had come down to this moment. The last attack that would do me in and leave any legacy I hoped to have in a lifeless heap in the dirt.
Crouching down to try to protect myself, I felt a familiar touch. Blinking through the darkness, I could see his kind eyes shining. Could it be? Was he really here?
Without thinking, I blurted, “Where have you been?”
He smiled. That same smile that showed he understood my weakness, but wondered how I could ever question him.
“I’ve been preparing our way; it’s time to move on. Our path is ready. And you are ready.”
I sat, speechless, at all he said. I felt his arm, strong around my shoulders, as he held me close. The doubt drained from me as I breathed heavily on him with relief.
He was back.
No…He had never left.
Had I really trusted Him, I would’ve known that.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t…”
His overwhelming compassion silenced my burning guilt as He pointed into the darkness. “See that?”
I stared through the wilderness and noticed a tiny speck of light that I hadn’t seen before.
He smiled, “That’s our next destination.”
I knew it was even farther away than it looked. And what might come between here and there, I had no idea. But one thing I did know – He was here. He had always been here. Even when I couldn’t see Him or feel Him, even when I didn’t want to…He remained. And I knew He always would.
I held Him once more, as the words spilled out strong and confident and truer than they had ever been…
