With chin in hand,
I sit and stare
Out the window over there,
Gazing across the land.
The road I see,
It leads to mountain peaks
Where I'd gladly while away many weeks.
My longing eyes shout their wistful plea.
Or that other road,
It leads to the ocean,
Where I could spend my time in slow motion.
As the sand, I blissfully toed.
Or I could just drive
To see what I may discover.
As from my tires, I removed some rubber.
With no destination, how would I know when I arrived?
My desk is crammed with papers
In every nook and cranny.
At the thought of work, my hands go cold and clammy
I have definitely caught the vapors.
Bent at the waist,
Eyes darting all around,
With careful footsteps, not making a sound,
Slinking out the nearest door, I depart with haste.
Jumping in the car,
I race home to pack
Everything I may need, even filling my luggage rack.
On the road again, in my mouth I stuff a candy bar,
Coffee, chips, cookies, and then some gum,
The car's so full; I think I hear it mutter
That it will surely burst from all the clutter.
There's no longer any need to be glum.
I drive down this road and that,
From freeways to paths to streets,
As I continue to consume all the treats,
Until I realize - I have no clue where I am at!
Out comes the map, the atlas, and GPS,
Undoubtedly, one will tell my location,
Or there will be no end to this vacation.
Shrugging my shoulders, I quickly toss them back into the mess.
With no goal in mind,
Why does it matter where I am?
Sometimes it's good to have no plan.
Who knows what I may find?
In a cabin, hotel, motel, and lodge,
Sleeping when tired.
Eating when desired,
Fast food, slow food, and hodge-podge.
I see the beauty of ocean, beach, and skies,
Mountain peaks and valleys low,
Feel the sunshine and the winds that blow.
With contentment, my heart sighs.
But alas, the money has run out.
I must return and face the music
Of emails, phone calls, and papers so confusing.
Such large heaps of work, I want to pout.
With chin in hand,
I sit and stare
Out the window over there,
Gazing across the land.

God bless~
Nice poem. It is always hard to go back to work after a vacation.
