“Susannah!”
Startled, the Bible slipped from my hand as my face burned in embarrassment. I grappled for the book awkwardly. Had I been that fidgety?
“These women were helping to support them out of their own means.”
I let out my breath in relief; Pastor Terence was reading from Luke 8. As quietly as I could, I turned back to Luke 8 and reread the first few verses. It was all about the parable of the sower. To be honest, I didn’t remember reading about the women that Jesus had healed and how they had served at the start of this chapter.
“They trusted God enough to serve with what they had,” Pastor Terence observed, “we are not told what their ‘own means’ were, but it is evident that they were grateful, servant-hearted women. How often does God tell us to do something but we say we don’t have what is needed for the task? We are not rich enough, we don’t have enough time, we can’t handle tears, someone else is more experienced than us...the list goes on. Surely that is what trusting and obeying is? Is it not trusting God enough to supply everything that we need so that we can obey His instructions and serve effectively? Turn to Galatians 5 verses 13 and 14.”
A piece of hair poked itself in my eye. I tried to tuck it into the masses of hair as gracefully as possible, my thoughts drifting to yesterday. I had woken up thinking of my brother. We talked regularly, every week in fact. He was married with two sweet children. They were quite a well off family which is why I could not fathom the bizarre thought that I should send them a hundred dollars. Yet I could not shake the thought. It was not a large amount of money but it was enough to think about if you were giving it away – especially to someone who had money.
“God, are you speaking to me?” I whispered, flipping through the pages of Luke absently. “This idea seems ridiculous. If I’m going to give it away, I need to know You’re speaking.” I wriggled, wondering if my questioning meant I was lacking faith.
“`Through love serve one another’. What does this mean? Well, it can take many forms, from inviting people around for meals to giving financially in a time of need. And we don’t always see the result of our actions either.” Gulping, I processed the pastor’s words, my heart racing a little as my finger trailed across Mark 12:41-44 where he was now reading from. It read, ‘They gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything – all she had to live on.’ Well I wasn’t putting in all my wealth, not nearly! But it did seem odd to give it to someone who didn’t appear to be in need and had never once mentioned that they were.
“Shall we all stand?” It was with great relief I stood, my body anxious for a change of position. I smiled at another tiny Avery child who was standing on a chair facing backwards while swaying to the music with her arms in the air.
We were barely through the church doors when my husband announced, “I think we should send your brother some money.” In awe, I simply nodded, fully aware of how close God was (despite my distracted mind and inability to focus fully) and His graciousness in confirming my thoughts. Next time I hope I won’t take as long to listen and obey.
