Over shame,
Wanting absolution.
I shoulder the blame.
I, Zacchaeus.
A true opportunist,
I admit to greed,
To wanting riches
Beyond my need.
I hear the sniggers,
I see the sneers,
Their whispered words.
My burning ears.
“That Zacchaeus!”
I've learned my lesson.
But is it too late
To undo betrayal
To put things straight?
Enough of grovelling
At the Romans' feet.
I crave acceptance,
A clean balance sheet.
A new Zacchaeus.
I hear the rumours.
The teacher's in town,
The healer, restorer.
The stories abound.
With nothing to lose,
Just wanting to see,
I swallow my pride
I climb up a tree.
Short, Zacchaeus.
The man stops below me;
My heart doesn't beat.
He calls me by name,
Speaks to this cheat.
He invites himself over,
Presumption it's not.
Pure is his motive.
I'm put on the spot.
What now, Zacchaeus?
All eyes are on me;
The murmur begins.
“Why does he not see
The tax-gatherer's sins?”
Change is upon me,
Hope's in the air,
A chance to start over.
I sense his deep care.
For me, Zacchaeus.
To make recompense
I'll relinquish my wealth.
I'm eager to please him
I humble myself.
He pronounces salvation
Has come to my place.
I believe him, I know it,
His life-giving grace.
A new Zacchaeus!
When I was sinking,
His lifeline, his rope,
Pulled me from anguish
To glorious hope.
