they hear the hearkening,
the far-off hearkening that calls to all.
yes, the wild geese are beginning to rise
into the last lingering of the aging autumn skies
on the verge of becoming winter grey,
into the golden haze left by the final harvest
and the smoke, the savory smoke
of smoldering fires of maple leaves and oak,
once fresh green, then rusting gold and now nearly gone away.
ah, the wild geese, they begin to rise
and yet they turn to wait for me,
for they sense it is that distant day, now upon me,
the day of gone away.
ah, the wild geese,
what has come of all my days?
after all the miles have passed me by,
and all the moments, gone away.
oh, I have smelled the fragrance of new-own hay, fresh upon the barley fields
and the pure-white lilies of Easter day amidst the snowy cotton dresses,
I have smelled the scent of the mountain pine,
and the scent of seas and schooners in the spray of salty brine.
oh, I have heard the trill of nesting bob-o-links
and the howl of hungry, fire-eyed wolves,
I have heard the hush of a loving lullaby,
and the tiptoe steps of white-tailed fawns on tiny hooves.
oh, I have seen the clouds both hug the misty earth in moist embrace
and reach high, high, oh so high into the satin sky,
I have seen lavenders and royal blues,
and tangerines and lemon trees and fireflies in the night.
oh, I have kissed some pretty girls
and one did kiss me too,
I have said a prayer and a shared a meal,
and wept a tear or two,
yes, wept a tear or two.
ah, the wild geese, they now do rise from the marsh,
to wing their long, long way to winter’s home,
for what has come of all my days,
what did I e’er achieve?
now that all the miles have passed me by,
and all the moments, gone away.
