He wasn't worth the beans he'd bought.
Success did well his grasp elude,
As o'er his folly she did brood.
"How can this ever work," she asked,
"For you who fail at every task?"
"How shall that childish seed you sow
Amid this arid desert grow?"
So spoke the lady, eyes askance,
And cast her yard a furtive glance.
But oh, the shock! Too awed to talk,
She marveled at the giant stalk
Which rose from dust to untold height,
A masterpiece of sheer delight,
This mile high ladder to the sky
Whose sturdiness Jack had to try.
He found each stem a hardy rung
For every slip of foot or tongue,
To aid his ever upward climb.
Exulted Jack, "The victory's mine!"
Yet could his mother truly trust
This project over which he'd fussed?
And could this narrow vine so tall
Avert Jack's feet from every fall?
An hour hence she saw him scurry
Down the beanstalk in a hurry,
Calling, "Mother, grab an ax!
These gifts I bear do heavy wax!
See David's harp and golden hen
Recovered from the devil's den?
Behold, I pierced the gates of hell
To snatch these pearls. Now hear him yell.
It's my fault, Mother, for you see,
I crashed his gates too eagerly.
To bind the strongman I forgot,
And now inside his net we're caught!"
How frantic then did Momma scramble!
To the woodshed she did amble,
Fearful of the giant's rumble,
But ere she on the tool did tumble,
A crack of thunder shook the sky
With latter rain none could deny.
Goliath shrieked, "I've lost my grip!"
As off the plant they heard him slip.
Dead fell the giant to the ground,
News of the deed spread all 'round town,
And everyone asked Jack how he
Did raise the stalk so expertly.
"By plowing up my wild heart's soil,"
Claimed he. "Through fervent scripture toil.
I read the Word and dug down deep,
To find the Rock whose faith I keep,
The seed whose suffering won renown,
Who buried 'neath the thorny crown,
Through death the greatest feat achieved,
Eternal life (if you've believed).
