Dispelled the darkness of the night,
And on a normal city scene
A new day dawned, same dull routine.
Ahead, for many, lay the chore
Of struggle, and the needy poor
Juggled their meagre subsidy
To cover bare necessity.
But on that day, long long ago,
Salvation came to Jericho.
And many many rose to find
A miracle of wondrous kind:
A parcel left by their front door,
A bulging purse spilled on the floor,
Raiment and clothing rich and fair,
Was handed round for all to share.
Possessions hoarded by a thief
Were now dispersed to give relief
Kindness and generosity
Distributed for all to see.
Renewed, transformed, sin washed away,
A new man from that very day,
Zaccheus met the Son of Man,
From that day on, his life began.
But Zaccheus stood up and said to the Lord, ‘Look Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.’
Luke 19:8
