Don’t worry, I’ll explain. My name is Roy G. Biv. Let me just look at my clipboard here, Ms. Dew. Yes, we’ve been expecting you.
Expecting me? For what?
Well, this is the crayon factory and you’re one of our new colors.
A new color? You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m light green, for Pete’s sake.
No, you’re not. You’re Honeydew.
What’s the difference?
Well, to be honest with you; there isn’t much difference. But kids today want something new. They want something they think they don’t already have. So, we take the same old colors, make them a shade lighter or darker, or mix them with a bit of another color and then give them a unique name. Kids used to think getting boxes of 96 crayons was fabulous; but now we’ve got over 200 colors per box.
And the kids are fooled by this?
Oh, we’re not trying to fool them. We’re just trying to … intrigue them. If they think they’re coloring something light green, that’s kind of boring. But if they see they’re coloring something “Honeydew”, they get excited.
They do?
That’s what our research has found.
So… all of the basic colors have been changed and given unique names?
That’s right. Here: let me show you. Over here we have Cotton Candy, Leather and Waterfall.
Really? They just look like pink, brown and blue, to me.
That’s because they are.
And, I suppose these guys over here aren’t red, orange and yellow?
Nope. Meet Maraschino, Ginger and Sunshine.
Well, at least I hope these two are white and black.
No - they’re Ping Pong Ball and Charcoal.
OK – I give up. Look: I can see how this would appeal to kids. But, what about adults? Don’t they balk at buying crayons in all these colors, or at the weird names?
You’d be surprised. You see, our research shows most adults only buy crayons to give to their kids. And, when they do, the research shows they figure the more colors the box has, the better the kids will enjoy it.
Well, it looks like you’ve got it all figured out. And, I suppose it doesn’t really matter what I’m called, as long as I’m used and enjoyed.
That’s the spirit. Well, I’d love to stay and talk, but I can see our next arrival coming up the path.
Let me guess: it’s Grape Jam, right?
Not bad! She’s called Eggplant, but you were really close. Here’s a map. If you take a left out of that door over there, you’ll find the labeling room. After you’re done there, you’ll gather near the others in your group: Lawn, Khaki, Peapod, Frog, and Pickle. When you’re all together, you’ll all go on to the packaging area. After that, you’ll be on your way.
OK. I think I’ve got it. Thanks for explaining it to me, Mr. Biv.
